IPFS is particularly useful for building a distributed web, in which websites and content may be hosted and retrieved without relying on a centralized server architecture. It provides increased scalability, faster information retrieval via data caching, and greater data integrity. It can also work offline or with intermittent connectivity, making it appropriate for a variety of applications other than web hosting.
 

IPFS Role in our idea

Hosting NFTs (Non-Fungible Tokens) on IPFS (Interplanetary File System) as opposed to centralized servers offers several distinct advantages:

 

Decentralization: IPFS is a decentralized network, meaning there is no single point of failure. When NFTs are hosted on centralized servers, they are vulnerable to server outages, data loss, or even server shutdowns. In contrast, IPFS relies on a distributed network of nodes, ensuring the availability and longevity of your NFTs.

 

Censorship Resistance: Centralized servers are subject to censorship, where authorities or hosting providers can remove content at their discretion. IPFS, being decentralized, resists censorship. Once content is added to IPFS, it becomes part of a distributed network, making it nearly impossible for any single entity to remove or block it.

 

Data Integrity: IPFS uses content-based addressing, meaning the content's cryptographic hash is used as its unique identifier. This ensures data integrity, as any change to the content would result in a different hash.

 

Improved Load Times: IPFS caches content locally, reducing latency and improving load times. When NFTs are hosted on centralized servers, users may experience slower load times if the server is geographically distant. IPFS nodes store and distribute content globally, minimizing this issue.

 

Reduced Costs: Hosting NFTs on IPFS can be more cost-effective in the long run. Centralized servers often require continuous maintenance and scaling as traffic increases. IPFS, with its distributed nature, can handle increased demand without requiring substantial infrastructure upgrades.

 

User Control: IPFS empowers NFT creators and owners to have more control over their content. They can decide when and how to update or remove their NFTs, reducing reliance on third-party hosting providers.

 

Scalability: IPFS is highly scalable, accommodating a growing number of NFTs and users. As the NFT ecosystem expands, IPFS can handle the increasing demand for hosting and distributing digital assets.

 

Open and Inclusive: IPFS is an open-source protocol, fostering inclusivity and collaboration. Anyone can participate in the IPFS network, reducing barriers to entry for creators and users.

 

Recognizing these difficulties, Dcentralverse has taken a different path. In Dcentralverse, NFTs, including Land and 3D assets, are securely stored on the IPFS network. The Land NFT comprises a JSON metadata file and a screenshot of the land, while 3D assets consist of a JSON metadata file and a GLB 3D model, typically under 100MB in size. This move aligns with the fundamental principles of decentralization, data integrity, and user control, ensuring that NFTs truly retain their unique value proposition, regardless of the platform they belong to.
